Yes, it is slow on older hardware, but on most computers used today it works very well. OpenOffice - the mother of them all non MSOffice suites, it deserves its reputation (and its widespread use in most Linux distros) because it really delivers - features, document compatibility, you name it. Until it has MS document (and ODF) compatibility that comes close to OpenOffice's i dont think it will be widely used.
I did read somewhere that the authors dont value the cross-application/document compatibility that high, but i am sorry to say that exactly this is what most users want (and need) because we dont live in a perfect world. Other than that it seems to be quite capable of editing documents if they are saved in its native format. doc documents (that open perfectly well in OpenOffice Writer) dont even come close to their original looks - also it has problems with the extended character set - it routinely loses romanian characters (that are supported when writing from it) when opening any kind of documents written in other programs (which, again, are rendered perfectly well in OpenOffice). xls/ods files and has the features i normally need.Ībiword - i like that its fast and does have some features, but it has serious problems with MS/ODF compatibility - most. ods support, making it capable of opening OpenOffice Calc files - although it supports less columns/rows and doesnt support some features.Īll around i use it because it is fast, it is capable of opening and writing. Gnumeric is quite a piece of work - i use it for simple stuff, its lightning fast and has the features most people will ever need for spreadsheets.
